Pedestrian Critical After Being Struck By DeKalb Officer

A woman was critically injured early Tuesday after being hit by a DeKalb police officer, who then crashed in a tree.

TUCKER, GA -- A pedestrian is in critical condition early Tuesday after being hit by a DeKalb County police cruiser, Patch has learned. The crash happened just before 7:30 a.m., near the corner of Chamblee Tucker and Brown roads, according to news reports.

The officer swerved to avoid a vehicle that suddenly turned in front of him, DeKalb authorities told local media. Neither of the two people involved in the crash have been identified although, DeKalb officials said the officer is 31 years old. The woman was in the crosswalk when she was struck, WGCL reports.

It was unclear if someone was inside the home at the time, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports. Both the injured woman and the officer were taken to the hospital after the crash. The officer was listed in stable condition, according to DeKalb police. The woman was taken to Grady Hospital, DeKalb County Fire and Rescue Captain Eric Jackson told WGCL.
