Cinco De Mayo In Virginia Highland: Deals, Where To Go, History
Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, is nearly here. Here's how to celebrate in Virginia Highland.
Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, and that means good deals can be had on great food near Buckhead. We’re talking cheap tacos, burritos and enchiladas, as well as adult beverages for those looking to have an extra-fun time.
Cinco De Mayo, also called the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla is held on — you guessed it — May 5. This year, it falls on a Sunday and happens to coincide with the first day of Ramadan. The holiday is meant to commemorate the Mexican Army’s defeat over Napoleon III and French troops in 1862. The English, French and Spanish invaded Mexico when the country decided to temporarily suspend repaying its debts, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica. While the English and Spanish eventually withdrew troops, the French, backed by affluent property-owners, stayed in the country and tried to establish a monarchy system under Maximilian of Austria.
On May 5, 1862, Mexico won the Battle of Puebla, leaving about 1,000 French soldiers dead. Fighting continued for another half-decade, but the battle became a symbol for Mexico, representing “resistance to foreign domination.”

Today, May 5 is celebrated with parades, speeches and reenactments of the battle in the state of Puebla. However, it is celebrated with much less fanfare elsewhere in the country — it’s not even a federal holiday in Mexico — and is often confused by Americans with Mexican Independence Day, which falls on Sept. 16 was established half a century before the Battle of Puebla.
In any case, the holiday means great deals nationwide this year, including endless mimosas at Chevy’s Fresh Mex, a free grilled breakfast burrito at Taco Bell and $5 margaritas and Patron shots at TGI Fridays, according to Offers.com. One deal could land you free burritos for an entire year.
