Mom Killed Walking Son to School

The mother and son were hit by a truck as they tried to cross Durham Park Road Wednesday morning.

A mother died and her son is in the hospital after they were struck by a truck while crossing a DeKalb County road Wednesday morning, local authorities said.

The accident happened on Durham Park Road just after 7 a.m. as the mother walked her son to a nearby school bus stop.

The pair was not in a crosswalk when they were hit by a private utility truck as they were attempting to cross the road.

The mother killed is Samsun Hahar, 37, reports WSB TV. Her 11-year-old son is listed in stable condition at Egleston Children Hospital, according to police.

The boy is a fifth-grade student at Dunaire Elementary School in Stone Mountain.

Authorities say the truck driver will not be charged in the accident.

FOX Atlanta says DeKalb County Schools released the following statement Wednesday afternoon:

“On behalf of the DeKalb County Board of Education and the DeKalb County School District, Superintendent Michael Thurmond expresses sympathy and condolences for the tragic traffic accident involving a mother and child from Dunaire Elementary School today. The principal of Dunaire is with the student, who is being treated at Egleston Hospital. A crisis intervention team is at Dunaire to offer counsel and support for the school’s students and faculty.”
