Retired DeKalb Police Officer Hurt in Motorcycle Accident
The retired police officer had just escorted a funeral at the Georgia National Cemetery near Canton when he was injured.
A retired DeKalb County police officer was injured in a motorcycle accident Monday afternoon at the entrance to the Georgia National Cemetery near Canton.
Crews with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the accident around 2:30 p.m. Jan. 12 on Veterans’ Cemetery Road, which sits off S.R 20/Knox Bridge Highway west of Canton.

First responders at the scene found a ”motorcycle, which hit a guardrail and threw the driver to the other side of the guardrail,” said Cherokee fire spokesperson Tim Cavender.
The 54-year-old driver, who Cavender said is a retired DeKalb County police officer, had just escorted a funeral and was leaving the cemetery when the accident occurred.

Cherokee County Battalion Chief Tom Pelletier said the biker may have a broken right leg and an injured shoulder. The driver was conscious and alert when he was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta for treatment.
No other injuries were reported. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
