Cherokee Sheriff's Deputies Teach Kids During 'Safety Town'

Local students learned how to stay safe in water, on bikes or in emergencies during the Cherokee County Safety Town at Bascomb Elementary.

WOODSTOCK, GA — Students learned from Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies this week during the annual Safety Town.

Safety Town took place at Bascomb Elementary School with three week-long sessions. Each day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon. The nominal registration fee of $85 includes a t-shirt, crafts, snacks, and a graduation medal. The photography package is an additional $15 and includes access to images taken throughout the week.

Safe Kids Cherokee County, led by Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services, is a local coalition through Safe Kids Worldwide, a global organization dedicated to preventing injuries in children, the number one killer of kids in the United States. Around the world, a child dies from an unintentional injury every 30 seconds. And millions of children are injured in ways that can affect them for a lifetime. Safe Kids Cherokee County is dedicated to preventing those types of preventable injuries to its citizens.

Since 2002, Cherokee County Safety Town has been a vital part of the transition to kindergarten for many preschoolers. Every summer, the program educates an average of 240 5-year-olds about how to stay safe in the water, around animals, poisons, or strangers, on the school bus, their bicycles, or the sidewalks, in the car, or in case of an emergency. Safety Town guarantee any upcoming kindergartner will leave camp with a wealth of valuable knowledge that will keep them safe and prepared in any emergency situation.

Safe Kids Cherokee County is one of 31 local coalitions in Georgia implementing safety programs and hands-on training. The grassroots network is mobilizing our community at the local level. Instructors provide public education programs, facilitate engineering and environmental modifications, enact and enforce laws and regulations and conduct research to drive programs and determine the efficacy of their efforts.
