Flood Safety Preparedness Week Begins In Cherokee County

Cherokee County EMA is encouraging residents to take part in Flood Safety Preparedness Week from March 11-15.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- Flooding can happen anytime it rains, with little or no time to prepare and evacuate with your loved ones. To give residents a chance to learn how to prepare for possible flooding, the Cherokee County EMA partners with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency for Flood Safety Preparedness Week from March 11-15.

Each day during the week will focus on a different flood safety tip, the dangers of flooding and how Georgians can prepare before flooding happens. Cherokee EMA is encouraging all residents to dedicate time to practicing emergency response procedures and learn how to deal with floods.

“Sometimes it only takes a few minutes for floods and flash floods to reach full peak,” Renee Cornelison, EMA Director, said in a release. “By taking steps to prepare before it strikes and knowing evacuation routes and alternate driving routes, you can ensure that you and your family stay safe. All residents are urged to work through communication plans and safety measures at home, so they will be ready if or when a flooding event happens. Please don’t drive around barricades or through flood waters when you can’t see the road underneath. Keep in mind that flood waters often compromise the integrity of a roadway leaving it unsafe. It’s important the roads are checked by officials before they are reopened.”
