Guys & Dolls: Concert To Benefit The Arts

You can come out to support Elm Street Cultural Arts Village, a Woodstock non-profit arts organization.

WOODSTOCK-TOWNE LAKE, GA -From Elm Street Arts: Starting February 22nd Elm Street Cultural Arts Village sings and dances its way back to 1930s New York City with the opening night of Guys & Dolls, a special benefit concert event. Partnering with Impact Dance of Atlanta and Elm Street’s in-house School of Music, Guys & Dolls is the classic story of gambling and relationships and boasts the well-known songs “Luck Be A Lady,” “A Bushel and a Peck,” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” among others. A portion of proceeds will benefit education in the arts.

“This collaboration has been really interesting and rewarding to bring together,” says Elm Street’s Associate Artistic Director Siobhan Brumbelow. Brumbelow is also directing and coordinating the benefit concert. “Presenting Guys & Dolls in a concert setting like this really celebrates the brilliance of this musical and why it’s still being performed today in 2019. We get to showcase phenomenal local dancers from Impact, sing these iconic songs with the help of Elm Street veterans as well as newcomers, AND tap our feet to some great music played by both our School of Music and local musicians. There’s definitely something for everyone to enjoy!”

The musical features a brassy score and sharp lyrics by stage and screen songwriter Frank Loesser (How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside) and a lively script by both screenwriter Jo Swerling (It’s A Wonderful Life, uncredited for Gone With the Wind) and Pulitzer Prize winning writer Abe Burrows (How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying). The original Broadway production opened in 1950, played for 1,200 performances, and won 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Choreography. Since then it has been revived several times on Broadway, has become a staple in the musical theatre repertoire, and many of the show’s songs have taken a life of their own as stand-alone pieces on the pop charts throughout the 1950s and 60s.
