River Ridge Student Brings Knife To School, Cuts Himself

A River Ridge student faces disciplinary action after the Friday morning incident, says schools spokeswoman.

WOODSTOCK, GA — A student at River Ridge High School cut himself with a knife Friday morning in front of other students on campus, a school spokeswoman said. The student was not seriously injured, she said.

In a letter emailed Friday to parents, Barbara Jacoby, the chief communications officer for the Cherokee County School District, said the student, "in a very upset state, revealed to classmates that he had a knife in his bag and began to injure himself."

The student faces disciplinary consequences for bringing a weapon to campus, she said. The school system is not releasing his name or grade to protect his privacy.

Jacoby said the school district sent out the email soon after the incident Friday because "we didn't want there to be any unfounded rumors or panic."

In the letter, she urged parents and others who have school safety concerns to use the SafeSchools Alert system. It's monitored by police and administrators, and reports can be made anonymously.
