Swimmer Credits Chattahoochee Gold with Next Big Step

Will Houghton says, "Once I moved to Canton and found Gold, I found a family."

Chattahoochee Gold swimmer Will Houghton has committed to Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee to further his athletic & academic goals. Will says, "I picked Carson Newman primarily because it offers a nationally ranked business program with a highly competitive, Top 20, DII swimming program."

Will is presently a high school senior and year-round competitive swimmer with the Chattahoochee Gold swim club based in Woodstock. "Up until I joined Gold, I was only a half-committed swimmer at Swim Atlanta. And this opportunity really allowed me to hone in on my passion to succeed. Without this experience and without the team, I certainly wouldn’t be swimming in college and I highly doubt I would have continued swimming at all. Gold put me on the map in terms of any swimming accolades I currently have."

"I believe Carson Newman chose me based off my academic success, my future swimming potential and my social nature. Seeing as I have only been swimming year-round very competitively for only two and a half years, seeing my times drop now let’s a coach know that I have a lot more to go. Let’s hope so at least. My swimming goals at Carson-Newman are to qualify for DII NCAA’s (tournament) in the 200, 500, and 1000 (freestyle stroke events) as a freshman. And potentially shoot for 2024 (Olympic) Trials as a senior."

Will's coach Mark Schilling thinks Will can go far, "I am so pleased that Will has found the perfect home for him at the next level. He is an amazingly hard working swimmer who has just scratched the surface of his potential. He is a natural leader and we will miss having him next year for sure."

Will starts at Carson-Newman next fall with plans to study marketing & communications.
