Two New Habitat Homes Go Up in Cherokee County

Habitat-NCG works on final houses in new Habitat community

On Saturday, July 20, 2019, Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia held a first nail for two homes in Woodstock for the Croft and Williams families. These are the fourth and fifth homes to go up in this small 5-house Habitat community. The day was filled with tears of joy and excitement as the homeowners started the new chapter in their lives, and alongside the volunteers began the process of building these homes.

For Shayla, this new chapter means independence. At the age of 20, Shayla suffered a horrific auto accident which left her paralyzed from the waist down. Her family was able to make some modifications to the basement of their home in order to accommodate her wheelchair, but knowing she will be able to support herself and live on her own gives her greater confidence in her future.

For the Williams Family, this new home will provide a more affordable housing option. Gregory, Monique’s fiancé, suffered a heart aneurysm in 2016 which had a lasting effect, but he is determined to be a great support for their children as a stay at home dad. Monique works two jobs to cover household expenses and the high rental costs in Woodstock. By purchasing this home with a zero interest mortgage, the Williams family will have extra discretionary funds to handle all that life throws at them.

Neither of these builds would have been possible without our sponsors who provide funds and volunteer labor to construct these homes. Thrivent Financial, a major donor to Habitat affiliates across the nation and around the world, helped to sponsor both homes along with our faith partners Alpharetta First United Methodist Church, Blessed Trinity High School, Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, Northbrook United Methodist Church, Roswell Presbyterian Church, Saint Brigid Catholic Church, Saint David’s Episcopal Church, Saint Peter Chanel Catholic Church, and Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
