The first of these projects largely includes foundational work, such as: removal of the old play apparatus, grading, installation of a concrete pad & retaining wall, improvements to the accessible walkways & ramps, adjustments to the irrigation, and landscaping. The concrete pads average nearly 1,500 square feet in size.

This foundational work has already been completed at Wailupe Community Park and ‘Āina Koa Neighborhood Park. Construction is beginning next week for the foundational work at Waimānalo Beach Park, with an on-site archaeologist monitoring the project for culturally sensitive sites.

The project archaeologists are with Pacific Legacy, Inc. They will be closely examining the soil as excavation occurs. If any cultural artifacts are found during construction, excavation will be halted and consultation with the State Historic Preservation Office will be initiated.

Following the work in Waimānalo, the project will progress to Lanakila District Park and Geiger Community Park. All foundational work is scheduled to be finished near the end of 2021, barring unforeseen circumstances.

The over $935,000 contract for this project was awarded to Hawai‘i Works, Inc.

Following the foundational work, a separate project will install the new playgrounds at the same park locations. The timeline of that project depends on the completion of the foundational work, and the delivery schedule for the play apparatus.

The $1 million project contract for the materials and installation of the playgrounds was awarded to Goto Construction, Inc.

Yesterday, U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono announced that the City and County of Honolulu is set to receive over $653,000 in grant funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for playground renovation at four O‘ahu parks. This funding will be directed towards these projects.

Similar installations of new playgrounds are ongoing at Haha‘ione Neighborhood Park and ‘Āhuimanu Community Park through separate projects.
