RUPERT, ID — Kody Leonard, 17, got a “timeout” after he asked a much older woman to be his date at his junior prom at Minico High School in Rupert, Idaho. Leonard’s “promposal” didn’t violate any school rules and he’s not really in trouble. But he did make his date, Sindy Gray, cry.

Gray, 64, is Leonard’s grandmother. She wasn’t able to make it to her own prom decades ago, so her grandson decided to give her an unforgettable memory.

To ask his grandmother to the prom, Leonard made a puzzle of a photo of the two of them together. After she fit the pieces together and they were taped in place, she saw a message on the back that said, “Will you go to prom with me?”

She buried her face in her palms and cried, a video Leonard posted on Facebook shows.

Gray didn’t answer right away.

When she did, she arranged with a local Ace hardware to put her answer in an oversized red Adirondack chair. “Kody’s in timeout for making Grandma cry,” the sign read.

Leonard told Yahoo Lifestyle he shared with friends his plan to ask his grandmother to prom. They were supportive and helped him come up with the creative way to ask her.

“My grandma has done so much for me and I wanted to do something back,” he told Yahoo. “The thing I am most excited about is sharing this experience with her.”

The prom is April 20. Leonard told the news outlet he is getting a tuxedo that will match his grandmother’s blue dress, and also is learning to dance to one of her favorite songs.
