43% More COVID Shots Given To Illinoisans In Past Week
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine was slated to arrive in Illinois Wednesday, which will add to the state's growing vaccine stockpile.
ILLINOIS — After winter weather wreaked havoc on the delivery and distribution of vaccines in Illinois in February, the state appears to be doling out substantially more doses in recent days.
In the past week, the seven-day rolling average for daily vaccine distribution across the state jumped by about 43 percent. As of March 1, more than 80,000 Illinois residents were receiving a COVID-19 shot every day.
A week earlier, that number stood at 56,000 doses doled out daily.

Meanwhile, IDPH was expected to receive its initial 83,000 doses of the newly authorized Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine by Wednesday, according to a statement from the IDPH.
Unlike the currently available Pfizer and Moderna doses, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires only one shot and can be stored at much higher temperatures. The vast majority of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine — more than 90 percent — will be distributed to mass vaccination sites throughout the state. The remaining doses will be shipped to other providers across the state, according to a IDPH news release.

These doses are in addition to the approximate 288,000 doses the federal government allocated to Illinois this week. This total does not include doses for the city of Chicago, which will receive its own allocation.
Last week, Gov. J.B. Pritzker estimated an average of 100,000 Illinois residents would soon be receiving a shot every day.
