ILLINOIS — The polls closed at 7 p.m. Tuesday, but with an all-time high volume of mail-in votes, the Illinois State Board of Elections and officials were reminding voters to be patient when it comes to learning who won. Results — including the apparent defeat of the graduated income tax amendment — continue to trickle in.
"We have to be patient about the results of all our races this year," Gov. J.B. Pritzker tweeted, adding, "It will possibly take until Wednesday or Thursday or Friday to get results for some races in Illinois and in states across the country."

Every vote must be counted. Particularly on a national level in the Presidential election: we may very well not know who won on Wednesday, let alone Tuesday night. Some states have more staff and high-speed processing of mail ballots, and some don’t.

Wednesday morning, the race for the so-called Illinois "Fair Tax" amendment, which would repeat the state's current flat tax and replace it with a graduated tax based on income level, appeared to have been defeated.
Opponents of the amendment declared victory, with Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider touting the defeat of the measure, saying, "Tonight, Illinois voters rejected Springfield politician’s tax hike gambit." The Vote Yes For Fairness Committee, backed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, also conceded defeat.
With 98 percent of the vote in Wednesday morning, "no" was leading with 55 percent of the vote, compared to 45 percent for "yes." The constitutional amendment would have to pass by either 60 percent of votes cast on the ballot measure itself or a simple majority (50 percent plus one) of all of those voting in the election.
