Illinois' Best Places To Raise A Family: 2018 List

A recent study looked at kid-friendliness factors like affordability, playgrounds per capita, families with young children and weather.

What's the best place in Illinois to raise a family? A DuPage County suburb once again tops a list of family-friendly places. A new study by consumer finance site WalletHub looked at factors like playgrounds per capital, number of attractions, share of families with young children, education, health and safety and affordability to rank Illinois communities based on the best place to move if you've got kids.

The site compared 222 Illinois cities, ranking Naperville as the best overall place to raise a family. The worst? Harvey, followed closely by Dolton and East St. Louis.

"To determine the most family-friendly Illinois cities, WalletHub compared 222 cities in the state across four key dimensions: 1) Family Life & Fun, 2) Education, Health & Safety, 3) Affordability and 4) Socio-economics," the site said.

These are the top 10 places to raise a family in 2018, according to WalletHub:

  1. Naperville
  2. Libertyville
  3. Troy
  4. Washington
  5. Columbia
  6. Chatham
  7. Normal
  8. Crystal Lake
  9. Plainfield
  10. Lindenhurst

Others in the top 20 include Yorkville, Channahon, Deerfield, Morton and Glen Ellyn.

WalletHub also rated cites with the most playgrounds per capita (Frankfort is the big winner here), most attractions like pools and museums (Chicago), most families with young kids (Montgomery) and lowest violent crime (Western Springs).
