ALGONQUIN, IL — Russ Farnum, Algonquin's director of community development, is stepping down at the end of the month to take over the role of City Administrator in Monticello, Iowa.

In a news release, the Village of Algonquin announced Farnum's departure, noting he has served as the village's community development director since 2008.

During his time in Algonquin, Farnum led several developments — Riverside Plaza, Glenloch, Grand Reserve and Creeks Crossing — out of a stall during the great recession and oversaw the entitlement process for several new developments in Algonquin, according to the release.

“Russ has been a tireless advocate for Algonquin and our business community” Acting Village President Debby Sosine said in a news release. “We’re grateful for his many contributions to our organization and community. This is a wonderful opportunity for him to return to his home state and we wish him well in Monticello.”

During Farnum's time in Algonquin, he was also involved with the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Chamber Commerce, and served recently on its board of directors.

“Algonquin has a history of planning for the best quality development in the Fox Valley,” Farnum said. “I believe our accomplishments in planning and development serve as a model, and will benefit the Village for decades to come. I have been supported by a great staff and Village Board in Algonquin who will continue to move the community forward."

Mike Darrow will serve as interim community development director, the village said. Darrow has worked in planning, economic development and municipal administration.

The village is now looking for a full-time replacement for Farnum. According to the job posting, the ideal candidate has a strong background in urban planning, economic development, building and zoning, historic preservation, code enforcement, and administrative leadership.
