Editor's note: The McHenry County Clerk on Wednesday afternoon reported it found "some anomalies" in Tuesday's election results. As a result, it has removed all election tallies from its website. The clerk's office said it intends to identify the source of the problem and re-tabulate results on Thursday. The numbers below could be inaccurate.

ALGONQUIN, IL — Former longtime village board trustee Robert Smith's lead in the race for the Algonquin Village Board slipped slightly as returns trickled in Wednesday morning. He, along with incumbents Jerry Glogowski and Laura Brehmer, all had a notable lead over incumbent Janis Jasper Wednesday morning.

Here is a look at unofficial vote tallies as of 8:40 a.m. Wednesday:

Smith said his goals if elected would be to get the village fully open again post-COVID. He'd also like to see the completion of downtown redevelopment, more retail and commercial development for the village's east and west sides and downtown and a better offering of programs and services through the village's recreation department. In addition, a dog park and keeping Algonquin's share of property taxes down are priorities.

Glogowski, who appears poised to secure his fifth term on the village board, says continuing to operate a government that is open and transparent with residents and businesses is the most pressing issue facing the village board.

"I will work with staff and other board members that we continue with our programs agenda and if the opportunities come along where we can continue to improve we will do so without hesitation," he wrote in his candidate profile on Patch.com.

COVID-19 wreaked havoc on municipalities' budgets and pushed many suburban village boards to make tough decisions with the hopes of boosting the economy. The Algonquin Village Board is coming off a particularly rough year after also being dealt an unexpected blow when longtime village president John Schmitt died last summer.

Schmitt, who was remembered as an "anchor" for the village during tough times, was 72 when he died and was first elected to the village board in 1993. He became village president in 2002.

"John always fought the good fight for his constituents, even when it took many years," said McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks following Schmitt's death. "John was a pioneering visionary — a model of what a city leader should be — and his death is a devastating loss to Algonquin and McHenry County."

Former village board trustee Debby Sosine stepped in to serve as acting village board president. She ran uncontested this year and has been elected to fill the seat, according to unofficial results.

Lake in the Hills Village Board

In Lake in the Hills, three longtime trustees appear poised to keep their seats, while Paul Mulcahy, a former village board trustee and president, trailed far behind them in the race Wednesday morning.

Mulcahy was ousted in 2017 when Lake in the Hills residents elected Russ Ruzanski as the new village board president. Incumbents Bob Huckins, Steven Harlfinger and Bill Dustin ran for re-election against Mulcahy.

Here is a look at the unofficial results as of 8:40 a.m. Wednesday:

  1. Steven Harlfinger: 590 votes, 27.14 percent
  2. Bob Huckins: 582 votes, 26.77 percent
  3. Bill Dustin: 579 votes, 26.63 percent
  4. Paul Mulcahy: 423 votes, 19.46 percent
