Algonquin Teen Sentenced to 18 Years in Father’s Murder

An Algonquin teen who killed his father in 2010 was sentenced to 18 years in prison, the Northwest Herald reports.

David W. Szalonek was 16 when he shot his father, Brian, 51, in their home on Westbourne Parkway. He pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder, the Herald reports.

According to reports, Szalonek was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and depression. He had a history of psychiatric problems and had been depressed and suicidal prior to the shooting.
