Algonquin's Art Van Furniture Picks Local Teen As 'Hometown Hero'
Angela Becker, 18, of Crystal Lake, received a $1,000 gift card and commemorative plaque.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — Art Van Furniture in Algonquin has selected a Crystal Lake teen as its hometown hero. Angela Becker was selected for "her selfless efforts to help others" and received a commemorative plaque and a $1,000 Art Van gift card, according to a news release.
Becker, 18, was nominated by Chris Kahle of Crystal Lake for her efforts to organize, raise funds and distribute over 150 bags of toys, games, toiletries and more to foster children and children living in shelters, according to a news release. Becker is a recent high school graduate now attending college "who gives back out of the goodness of her heart," according to a news release.
“Inspirational heroes like Angela are everywhere; in our own homes, at our workplaces, and in our community,” said David Van Elslander, community spokesperson for Art Van Furniture and son of founder Art Van Elslander. “It’s the small acts of kindness that make such a big difference, like lending a hand, eliciting a smile or donating one’s time. We hear stories every day in our showrooms about wonderful people, and this is our way of thanking them for their efforts.”

Each of Art Van Furniture’s 77 locations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Iowa selected a deserving inspirational hero in their community. Shoppers were encouraged to nominate someone they knew who positively impacts others through their words or deeds and quietly uplifts others by simple acts of kindness.
Nominations were submitted from September 26 through October 14, 2019.
