Flood Warning In Effect: Hour-By-Hour Illinois Forecast

The National Weather Service has also issued a flash flood watch for all counties in the Chicago area through 3 p.m.

ILLINOIS — A flash flood watch has been issued for towns throughout northeastern Illinois through 3 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. In addition, towns in northern Kane, northern DuPage and northwestern Cook counties are currently under a flood warning through 1 p.m. Friday as roadways begin to flood and more flooding is possible. Meanwhile, periods of moderate to briefly heavy rain will continue through mid-afternoon.

The flash flood watch remains in effect through 3 p.m. for Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, Cook, La Salle, Kendall, Grundy and Will. The flash flood watch was originally set to expire at 10 a.m. but weather officials extended that to 3 p.m. A flash flood watch means conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.

Towns expected to experience flooding include: Elgin, Schaumburg, Wheaton, Elmhurst, Lombard, Carol Stream, Addison, St. Charles, Glen Ellyn, West Chicago, Roselle, Villa Park, Dupage Airport, Bartlett, Streamwood, Hanover Park, Wood Dale, Winfield, Itasca and Wayne.

In addition, area rivers and streams are running high, which will mean rainfall will more quickly go into runoff.

A flood warning has been issued for the rising rivers, including for the Des Plaines River near Des Plaines, the Des Plaines River at Riverside, Des Plaines River near Gurnee, Des Plaines River near Russell, East Branch Du Page River at Bolingbrook, Fox River in Montgomery, and the Fox River at Algonquin Tailwater. Some of the warnings are currently in effect while other rivers are expected to start nearing flood stage in the coming days. The National Weather website provides updates on the different rivers' water level and the current status of warning for that river. The NWS website also lets local residents know what type of flooding is expected near the warned areas as the water continues to rise.

Given the recent heavy rainfall amounts, any additional heavy rain may produce localized flash flooding, according to an update just before 10 a.m. from the National Weather Service. Localized flooding in poor drainage areas, especially urban ones is also likely.

Authorities have reported flooded roads and viaducts at several locations across northern DuPage County, as well as Will and Cook Counties.

At 10 a.m. Friday, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated 1 to 2 inches of rain has fallen on top of saturated ground over the past three hours. The heavier rain will gradually end from east to west late Friday morning morning, but runoff is expected to continue to result in flooding across the warned area into early afternoon.

If anyone encounters a flooded roadway, officials are reminding them to turn around and not drive through.

Meanwhile, the Fox Waterway Agency has closed the lower Fox River to boat traffic. The northern portion of the Fox River and the Chain O' Lakes are currently listed as "No Wake." The lower portion of the river runs south from the Stratton Dam in McHenry.
