Lake in the Hills Street Market Quietly Closes

Lake in the Hills Street Market is not opening this season due to a lack of interest, an organizer said.

“We are not doing it this year,” said Tony Sarillo, of Sarillo Development in Crystal Lake. “It just didn’t have the turn out we hoped.”

Sarillo approached the LITH board in 2011 to open the street market, 8601 S. Route 31, on a piece of property owned by developer Ray Plote.

There was some opposition from a neighboring business owner who felt it would be “an eyesore.” However, the village board approved a temporary use permit for two years.

A Patch reader who visited the street market Sunday, April 28, discovered it was closed and asked what happened. A call to the phone number listed for the street market went unanswered but there was a message:

“Lake in the Hills Street Market is no longer in business. We will not be accepting vendors or guest this summer. Please do not leave a message, as these calls will not be returned. Thank you for your support.”

The street market opened in July 2011. Its first weekend drew 130 vendors. Sarillo did not have attendance figures. He said his father, Nick Sr., was operating the street market.
