Authorities say Castillo's family went searching for their dog after Castillo said he was going to take the pet for a walk at about 4:30 a.m. on March 25 and never returned, according to the Daily Herald. They found the dog with stab wounds in the parking lot at Helm Woods Forest Preserve. Castillo's car was also there.
The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital where it later died, Mike Gilloffo, Kane County Forest Preserve District police chief, told the Daily Herald. Castillo told police God told him to kill the dog and was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation before he was jailed, the paper reported, citing authorities.
