McHenry Co. Recycling Event Hit Capacity Limit

Some residents were not able to drop off their recyclables at the event Saturday.

Due to the overwhelming participation in the residential recycling event held on Saturday, May 22, at McHenry County College, capacity limits were reached, and some residents were not able to drop off their recyclables. The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) apologizes to the residents who were inconvenienced and reminds all county residents of other recycling opportunities in addition to single day events:

Elgin Recycling, located at 5114 Terra Cotta Ave. in Crystal Lake, will accept electronics for recycling Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, please visit their website at www.elginrecycling.com or contact them by phone at (847)741-4100.

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County maintains three locations where clean Styrofoam (pink/blue foam siding is not accepted) can be dropped off for recycling:

  • Village of Algonquin, Public Works. 110 Meyer Drive, Algonquin. Open 24/7.
  • Algonquin Township Highway Department. 3702 U.S. Hwy. 14 located, Crystal Lake. Open Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • City of Woodstock Public Works. 326 Washington Street, Woodstock. Open Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The 2021 McHenry County Green Guide is also now available at www.mchenry.edu\green and is an easy way to find locations that accept a variety of products for recycling.

The MCDH will accept old alkaline batteries through June 11 at its Division of Environmental office, located at 667 Ware Road, Suite 110 in Woodstock. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. No rechargeable batteries, cell phone batteries, tool batteries will be accepted, only AA, AAA, C, D and 9 Volts.

Future recycling events in McHenry County in 2021 include the following:

  • Household Hazardous Waste from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 26. The event will be held at the Huntley School District Reed Road School Campus located at 10910 Reed Road, Lake in the Hills.
  • Residential Electronics Recycling from 9 a.m. to Noon on September 11. The event will be held at Woodstock North High School located at 3000 Raffel Road, Woodstock.
  • Residential Electronics Recycling from 9 a.m. to Noon on October 16. The event will be held at Chesak Elementary School located at 10910 Reed Road, Lake in the Hills.
