Tollway Mobilizing for Messy Commute

The Illinois Tollway is mobilizing all available resources to keep roadways clear as rain this afternoon is expected to turn into snow at the start of this evening’s rush hour and continue into the night.

“Drivers should build in some extra travel time tonight as rain turning to snow is expected to slow down this evening’s commute,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. “As always, we remind our customers to use caution and leave room for snow plows to do their job.”

Illinois Tollway staff has been monitoring conditions throughout the day and is prepared to mobilize snowplows and other equipment as needed when the weather begins to change.  The Tollway’s Snow Operations Center is open, staffed with traffic center operators and snow and ice control supervisors managing this winter weather event.

For drivers traveling this afternoon and evening, the Tollway provides the following tips:

• Slow down and leave enough time to reach your destination.
• Do not make sudden lane changes and always use your turn signal.
• Don't follow too closely and increase your intervals between vehicles.
• Yield to snowplows and emergency vehicles.
• Dial *999 on your cell phone to report incidents.

The Illinois Tollway’s Traffic and Incident Management System (TIMS) provides real-time travel times and roadway conditions via the Illinois Tollway’s website, and on over-the-road electronic message signs throughout the Tollway.
