Before taking on any digging projects, whether big or small, call 811 or click before you dig. 

Protect yourself and your family and avoid damage to neighborhood underground utility lines. Call J.U.L.I.E. (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) at 811 or visit illinois1call.com before taking on projects that require excavation around your home or business. The service is free.

State law requires the person doing the digging to contact J.U.L.I.E. with the locate request information at least 48 hours (two business days, excludes weekends and holidays) in advance of the start of excavation. You will be provided with a “dig number” for your records.

You must begin your project within 14 calendar days from the time you contact J.U.L.I.E. If you'd like to start your project over the weekend, remember to contact J.U.L.I.E. by Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

Even if you’re digging in the same location as a previous project, contact J.U.L.I.E. Digging just a little to the left or right or a little deeper can damage an underground utility line.

Common projects that require a J.U.L.I.E. locator request include, but are not limited to, decks and patios, signs, tents, fences, mailbox posts, home additions, gardens, swimming pools,  planting trees and shrubs, and landscaping.

In order to help the member utility locator to properly identify your project area, J.U.L.I.E. recommends that you pre-mark the area where you will be digging with white paint and/or flags.

Please note, J.U.L.I.E. member utilities are only required to mark the lines that they own, not privately installed or owned lines. Privately owned lines may include water and sewer services as well as electric and gas lines to a garage or workshop.
