A Wonder Lake woman has died following a Thursday crash in McHenry that was caused by a 19-year-old driver running a red light, police said.

The McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 4:05 p.m. Thursday to the intersection of Route 120 and Curran Road for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

McHenry Deputy Police Chief Thomas Walsh said a black 2006 Ford Crown Victoria and a gray 2012 Hyundai Veloster collided in the intersection.

The crash caused the Ford to drive off the roadway and come to a rest upright in a drainage ditch on the southeast corner of the intersection.

A preliminary investigation shows the Ford was traveling eastbound on Route 120 at Curran Road.

The Hyundai was traveling westbound on Route 120 attempting to turn left to travel southbound on Curran Road.

The Ford, driven by Emmet J. Zywiec, 19, of Wonder Lake, disobeyed a red light, drove into the intersection and struck the Hyundai, Walsh said.

Zywiec was uninjured, however, the Ford’s passenger, a 52-year-old Wonder Lake woman, was injured and trapped inside the vehicle.

It took firefighters approximately 15 minutes to extricate the woman from the vehicle.

The 52-year-old was then flown by a LifeNet medical helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where she later died.

There were four occupants in the Hyundai. Two of them were transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The other two did not report any injuries at the scene, Walsh said.

Zywiec was cited for disobeying a traffic control signal and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

The intersection was partially closed for approximately one hour. The Lake County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the 52-year-old victim.
