Barrington Cafe Has Best Doughnuts in State: Buzzfeed

The Heart of Europe Cafe was chosen as the best place to get a doughnut in the state in an article published this past week on Buzzfeed.

Buzzfeed selected the top doughnut shops in every state in its Oct. 9 article, signaling out the Heart of Cafe as the place to go for donuts in Illinois.

The cafe, opened last year by sisters Kasia Mierzejewska and Emilia Augustyn after they moved from Poland to Barrington, has been especially busy since the article went live, according to the Daily Herald.

Heart of Europe Cafe sells their made-to-order Spring Donuts. Here is a description, posted on the Spring Donuts website, about the popular pastries:

It is a great delicious dough made from scratch each day, hand rolled onto a rod, couted with sufar and bakes in a special oven which we shipped from Europe. It’s also called Chimney Cake/Kürtős Kalács which was originally baked over hot coals by Hungarians residing in Transylvania, Romania – the home of the mythical Dracula.

There are a variety of coatings on the donuts including nuts, oreos, cinnamon and sprinkles and visitors can choose if they would like peanut butter or nutella on the inside.

The shop served several new customers this past week, including some who came from as far as downtown Chicagoto try the acclaimed donuts, the Daily Herald reports.

"It's only me and my sister, so you can imagine how much work it has been," Kasia Mierzejewska told the Daily Herald "We ran out of Nutella completely and didn't have time to go to the store to buy more."

The shop, located at 13 S Cook Street in Barrington, also serves tea, coffee, smoothies and sandwiches.
