Barrington Man Dies While Snowboarding With Friends

Derek Harms, a graduate of Barrington High School, died from multiple blunt force trauma injuries while snowboarding in Duluth, Minnesota.

BARRINGTON IL – A 20-year-old college student from Barrington who died Sunday while snowboarding in Minnesota is being remembered as a kind man with an abundance of energy, the Daily Herald reported. Derek Harms was snowboarding with several friends on one of the most challenging hills at Spirit Mountain in Duluth, Minn., early Sunday afternoon when the accident occurred. When he did not make it to the bottom of the hills, his friends went looking for him and found him with multiple blunt force injuries.

In addition to being known for his big heart, Harms was also quite recognizable for his big hair, said Amy Broadbridge, a director at Camp Deerhorn in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Harms spent nine summers as a camper and then a counselor at the Wisconsin camp.

"We like to say that his heart was as big as his hair," Broadbridge said.

It's obviously that Harms also had a good sense of humor. A YouTube video shows the Barrington High School student sticking 288 pencils into his hair.
