Solly’s Way Foundation to Kick Off First Fundraising Effort
Charity golf outing and dinner planned July 18 at Makray Memorial Golf Club.
It was just one year ago that Barrington resident Solly DeLaurentis, Jr. lost his life during a charity motorcycle run.
“On June 3 of last year, I had no idea how drastically my family’s life was about to change,” said Sharyn DeLaurentis, Solly’s widow and mother to their three children, Anthony, Natalie and Rianna.
After that initial shock and confusion, Sharyn realized that although Solly’s death has affected countless lives, none have been more significantly impacted than his three children.
Sharyn, who was on the back of the motorcycle with Solly when he died, says she is committed to having something positive come from their family’s tragic loss.
What has come from that loss is the Solly’s Way Foundation.
The foundation will kick off its first fundraising effort, a golf outing at Makray Memorial Golf Club, on Thursday, July 18. The golf club is located at 1010 Northwest Highway in Barrington.
Launched in April, Solly’s Way Foundation was established by Solly’s family and friends to provide college scholarships to children who have lost a parent or guardian and live in the Barrington, Lake Zurich and Wauconda suburban areas.
“Losing a parent at a young age is clearly one of life’s most difficult challenges,” Sharyn said. Although Sharyn said she is fortunate to have such a strong and determined group of devoted friends and family to support her, she realizes not everyone is so lucky.
“It was always Solly’s way to respond to life’s challenges with strength and compassion, so we are trying hard to follow in his footsteps,” she said.
Information on how to purchase tickets for the July 18 event is available at the foundation's website.
The day begins at 11 a.m. with registration, lunch and a noon shot-gun tee off with open bar. Events throughout the day will include a Longest Drive challenge, a Closest to the Pin competition, an opportunity to Beat the Pro and a putting contest. The evening events began at 6 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction. Dinner and dancing will begin at 7 p.m., accompanied by the music of Tony Ocean. A live auction starts at 8:30 p.m., featuring a presentation by Gino Saravino.
Scholarship applications are currently available for high school students in the Barrington, Lake Zurich or Wauconda areas who have lost a parent or guardian.
Solly lived and worked in the three community throughout his life and felt a strong connection to the people and businesses he encountered, his wife said
