Steven A. Miner II, Lawyer, on Tips for Your Motorcycle Road Trip

Steven A. Miner II discusses what you should be doing to make your next motorcycle road trip a great one!

Warmer weather will be here before we know it and there is no better time to start planning a long weekend trip on your motorcycle. Whether you are a seasoned biker or taking your first road trip, the following tips will help ensure you have a successful road trip.

Choose Wisely

When planning a road trip with your bike, you should consider planning a trip where you can make multiple stops. However, if you are a more seasoned rider and have taken longer trips, then perhaps the best route for you is one that makes more poignant stops after prolonged periods of time. It is also important to look at rides based on the comfort of your bike, as longer rides on an uncomfortable seat can make for an unpleasant trip.

Pack Light

Most motorcycles do not offer much storage so it is recommended to only pack the essentials when planning on traveling on your bike. While there are a variety of saddlebags and tour packs available, you have to cater to the needs of your trip, the style of your bike, and most importantly, whatever you install on the bike should add character to the bike because the bike is an extension of the personality of the rider. No different than any road trip, you have to plan ahead and know what you will need and what is nonessential.

Stay Hydrated and Take a Break

The worst thing that can happen on a long ride is dehydration. We often forget when the sun is beaming down on us at 65 m.p.h. with our hair in the wind and not a concern for miles that our bodies require hydration. There is no harm in keeping water bottles in your saddlebags to ensure that you (and your passenger) stay hydrated on those long trips.
Scheduling breaks into your trip is a great way to give your body a rest, but it is another way to get in a quick drink and enjoy the scenery. Sitting on a bike for long hours without a break can cause stiff legs and a stiff rear end. Taking a break is a great way to make sure you are staying on course but also check the bike is in good condition!

Before the Ride

To make the best of your road trip, schedule an appointment with your mechanic. Your bike could need minimal adjustments before you head out on the road. Once you head out on the road minor things can end up happening. Always carry small essential spare parts to reduce the amount of time it would take to wait for roadside services to help fix your bike. Knowing your motorcycle and how it reacts to road conditions and longer trips helps you connect with the bike to both ensure the bike’s longevity and that you and your passenger can make a lifetime of memories while riding.
