1,957 Cases, 19 Deaths In Batavia Since Pandemic’s Start

Nearly 1,500 coronavirus cases were reported in Batavia between Oct. 1 and Jan. 31 amid a huge surge throughout the state.

BATAVIA, IL — Batavia is likely to record its 2,000th coronavirus case less than a year after its first, following a huge surge of cases in recent months.

Batavia reported its first coronavirus case on March 13. By the end of September six and a half months later, the city had just 360 total cases, according to statistics from the Kane County Health Department.

Much like the rest of Illinois, new coronavirus cases started to surge in Batavia in early October.

Kane County Surpasses 50K Coronavirus Cases

The city’s seven-day rolling average of new cases stood at about 3.5 at the start of October but soared over the next six weeks, reaching an all-time high of more than 27 on Nov. 12, according to public health data.

Nearly 1,500 new cases were reported in Batavia between Oct. 1 and Jan. 31 during that surge, which did not fully subside until the start of February, the state’s data shows.

The city’s seven-day rolling average of new cases was down to 5.3 on Tuesday, a drop of more than 80 percent from its peak in mid-November.

Public health officials have reported 1,957 total cases in Batavia, as of Feb. 23. Nearly 40 percent of the city’s cases have been reported in the past three months, the state’s data shows.

Nineteen Batavia residents have died from coronavirus-related conditions since the start of the pandemic last spring. At least 10 deaths have been linked to long-term-care facilities in the city, including eight at Heritage Woods of Batavia, public health data shows.
