Batavia Graduates Earn Rotary Club Scholarships

Two recent Batavia High School graduates received $2,000 scholarships from the Rotary Club of Batavia.

BATAVIA, IL — Two recent Batavia High School graduates are receiving some help with their college costs after earning scholarships from the Rotary Club of Batavia.

Maisie Sweeney and Chloe Valentino will each receive $2,000 after winning the scholarships, which the organization gives to “students who show extraordinary ability and promise while ... dedicating themselves to service to others and to the community.”

Sweeney, who will be attending the University of Minnesota to study biomedical engineering, participated in a dozen theater productions while working three part-time jobs and completing numerous community service projects throughout her high school career, according to a news release.

Sweeney, who was a member of the National Honor Societies for math and English, plans to become a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon or a pediatric oncologist, the release states.

Valentino, who will be studying finance and public policy at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, was a founder and co-president of Batavia High School’s Model U.N. team and a 4-year member of the soccer team.

She also served as president of the school’s Interact Club and organized and supervised many community service projects over the past four years, according to the release. Valentino is seeking a career in business or government where she can to improve the infrastructure and quality of life in low-income communities, the release states.
