Batavia Key Club Awarded at State level for Volunteer Service

Batavia Key Club

Recently the Batavia High School Key Club, a sponsored youth program of the Batavia Kiwanis Club, was recognized at a state-wide leadership conference for their dedication to service to the Batavia community. Demonstrating significant leadership and oratorical qualities, Erin Tevonian the President of the Batavia Key Club was awarded 2nd place in the statewide Oratorical Contest. Attending the Illinois and Eastern Iowa Key Club District Convention along with Erin were the future officers of the Batavia Key Club to receive leadership training as well as gather information about Key Club International. They also had opportunities to meet other Key Club members from around the state and speak with representatives from the March of Dimes and Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation to swap service project ideas, including their “Mr. BHS” project. Considered to be one of the finest service projects in the state, the Batavia Key Club won 2rd place in the single service category for their “Mr. BHS” project as well as 2nd place for the Robert Hall achievement award and 1st place for their donation to Spastic Paralysis Research, raising over $7,000. The Batavia Key Club also won 1st place in the Traditional Scrapbook Contest. Among those individually recognized for excellence were: Distingushed President Erin Tevonian, Distinguished Vice-President Elyse Burns, Distinguished Secretary Rachel Schneider, Distinguished Statistical Secretary Kate McClure, Distinguished Junior Member Haley Baumgartner. Honored for achieving at least 100 hours of volunteer service were Elyse Burns, Will Freiburger, Rachel Schneider, Salina Siemsintinofski, and Erin Tevonian. The club was also awarded with the Interclub Award, K- Family Relations Award, Club Newsletter Award, Technology Award, Theme and Major Emphasis Award, as well as the R.I.O.T. Award. The Batavia High school Key Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Batavia and award winning advisor and teacher Marnie Heim.
