Batavia Residents Reminded To Clear Snow from Fire Hydrants

Heavy snowfall can make it difficult for fire crews to access hydrants.

BATAVIA, IL --- After Monday's heavy snowfall and with cold weather in full swing, Batavia Fire Department officials are reminding residents to clear snow from fire hydrants that are near their homes. They stress the urgency of keeping hydrants accessible for emergency responders in case of a fire.

In a press release, city officials said the Batavia Public Works Department is sometimes unable to clear hydrants on their own due to the other snow maintenance they perform throughout the city. Officials added that it's especially difficult for city workers to clear snow from hydrants that are on cul de sacs or or curved streets where space is limited.

If you live near a fire hydrant that has been buried in snow, the fire department recommends clearing a 3-foot by 3-foot perimeter to allow for easier access should a fire break out.
