Batavia’s Coronavirus Case Count Doubles In 7 Weeks
Public health data shows the number of new cases in Batavia started to grow in mid-July and has yet to subside.

BATAVIA, IL — More than half of all coronavirus cases among Batavia residents have been recorded over the past two months, largely driven by a surge in cases since mid-July, according to public health data.
Statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health show 152 residents have tested positive since the start of July, representing about 54 percent of the 284 cases recorded in the city throughout the pandemic. Public health data shows 125 of those positive tests have come since July 19.

Though it took nearly four months for Batavia to reach 142 coronavirus cases, the city has recorded that many in the past seven weeks, the state's data shows.
Between mid-March and mid-July, the city only recorded more than five new cases on three days. Since July 21, the city has recorded more than five new cases eight times, public health data shows.

People under the age of 30 represent a little under 40 percent of the 284 positive tests recorded among Geneva residents.

No one under the age of 60 has died after testing positive for the coronavirus, the state's data shows. Both of the city’s coronavirus-related deaths have been linked to the Batavia Rehabilitation facility, according to the IDPH.
