Batavia Walmart Loses Thousands In ‘Cash Out’ Scam: Report

BATAVIA, IL — Batavia police are investigating a “cash out” scam that saw two men walk out of the local Walmart store on the day after Christmas with nearly $3,000 in electronics, the Kane County Chronicle reports.

The two suspects entered the store around 6 p.m. Dec. 26 and gathered electronic items before checking out separately at the electronics department register, the report states.

Both men told the cashier their credit cards require two-step verification and convinced them to type “cash” into the register for verification, according to the report.

That caused the register’s cash drawer to open and a receipt to be printed, making it look like a normal transaction, but no money was ever paid by the two men running the scam, the Kane County Chronicle reports.

The first man had four items worth $1,045, while the second man left the store with eight items valued at $1,783, the report states.
