Biking Keeps Covenant Living at the Holmstad Residents Active

Proximity to Local Trail Along Fox River Perfect for Cyclists

Batavia, Ill.: The weather may be starting to cool down, but that won’t be stopping a group of die-hard bicyclists at Covenant Living at the Holmstad from hitting the trails along the Fox River near their community. This is the one of the activities that has kept a handful of residents active during the pandemic.

92-year-old Will Hohm, a retired physician, can be spotted on the trail most mornings as the sun rises. Hohm rides a Sun tricycle and puts in at least six miles a day, six days a week.

“My love of biking started years ago when my wife and I made a concerted effort at the age of 40 to exercise every day,” said Hohm. “Years ago we’d ride from St. Charles up to Wisconsin, but now with the trail so close to Covenant Living, it’s much easier to stay in shape and close to home.”

Since Hohm purchased his tricycle and moving to Covenant Living in September of last year, he has logged over 1,400 miles by riding every day.

Hohm isn’t alone. Paul Bengtson and his wife are avid bicyclists too. They try to hop on their bikes and ride as much as their schedules allow.

“Our goal is to get in about a few miles when we ride on the trails,” said Bengtson. “If we find we don’t have a lot of time, we’ll make a loop or two around the perimeter of our campus here—the mileage adds up doing it that way too.”

Both residents believe the benefits of bike riding help to keep them active and healthy. There are other residents who’ve gone on planned group biking events as well. These are proving to being very popular.

“It is wonderful to see how this kind of activity draws people together with the common goal of getting outdoors and exercising and that’s why we’ve planned group biking events more often,” said Nicole Sickafoose, Covenant Living at the Holmstad resident life director. “Our location makes is so easy for them to hop on the trail and take advantage of riding along the Fox River or making stops at local coffee shops in Batavia or on the longer trips to North Aurora.”
