Fermilab's Family-Friendly Open House Makes Physics Fun

Take driving tours to see bison and a bubble chamber before learning about liquid nitrogen and STEM through hands-on activities.

BATAVIA, IL -- Kids and their parents can grasp physics through hands-on demonstrations and interactive exhibits at Fermilab's Family Open House. Thenevent, slated for Feb. 10,is appropriate for kids in 3rd grade and over and includes driving tours of experimental sites and special ticketed presentations led by STEM professionals.

Driving tours are geared for ages 10 and older and require tickets, which will be available on a first come, first serve basis the day of the open house. Tours will cruise by bison, a bubble chamber, and Fermilab's village, in addition to sites where the lab conducts experiments.

Visitors can also snag tickets to tour Fermilab's Linear Accelerator (LINAC) and see a mockup of the main injector and main control room.

Ticketed presentations will run throughout the day, giving guests a chance to learn about physics from trained professionals in the field. The schedule for ticketed presentations is as follows:

Cooler Than Cool at 1:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Scientists will demonstrate how liquid nitrogen works and teach kids about how liquid nitrogen is used in magnetism and electricity.

Live From Sanford Lab! at 2 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.

Join in a live chat with scientists who work underground at Sanford Laboratory in South Dakota. The scientists will answer questions and conduct two experiments live on camera.

STEM Panel

STEM professionals who work at Fermilab will be on hand to answer questions about the work they do. They'll also share stories about their backgrounds and what inspired them to pursue careers in the STEM fields.
