Seasonal & Holidays

Here are a few ideas for enhancing your holidays

From Mooseheart to DeKalb, here's a look at a few activities for the holiday season

Here are a few suggestions to help you celebrate the season:

• Garfield Farm Museum in LaFox will host Candlelight at the Inn from 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 2 and Dec. 3. The special event provides visitors a glimpse of winter hospitality in the 1840s. The event includes live music, refreshments and a bake sale. We always enjoy our visits to the museum, particularly during this seasonal event. Enjoy lunch or an early dinner at Schmidt's Towne Tap in nearby Elburn. Schmidt's is one of our favorite stops and is located at 107 N. Main St. in downtown Elburn.

• The St. Charles Singers will present their annual holiday concert on two dates at the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in downtown St. Charles. The singers will perform at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 and at 3 p.m. Dec. 3
at the church. Downtown St. Charles offers a variety of locations for a pre-concert meal or a post-concert treat. Rather than list all of them here, we suggest visiting the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce's website for more information.

• The Ellwood House Museum in DeKalb is decorated for the holidays and will be open for tours Dec. 1 to
Dec. 3. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 for ages 6 to 17. The open house tours are a wonderful opportunity to
view the mansion in all its holiday splendor. First-time visitors and those familiar with the mansion will be delighted with the sights. When in DeKalb, we always enjoy a visit to the Hillside Restaurant, which offers both a set menu and seasonal specials. However, if you prefer Mexican dishes, visit Eduardo's. Both restaurants are located in downtown DeKalb, just a short distance from the Ellwood House Museum.

• Misty River Music Makers will present their annual Christmas Concert at1 p.m. Dec. 9 at the House of God at Mooseheart. Tickets are $10 for adults. Children ages 12 and younger are admitted free. The Music Makers are a true treat at any time of year, and their annual Christmas celebration will help lift your holiday spirits.

• Mooseheart's annual Holiday Lights display continues through Dec. 31 and features more than 80 displays along a nearly two-mile route. Mooseheart is open for tours daily from 5 to 9 p.m. Children can visit with Santa Dec. 8 to 10 and Dec. 15 to 17 in the Mooseheart field house, where they'll also find crafts, Christmas cookies and hot chocolate. Touring the display is a holiday tradition for my family, including my adult children. We add to the outing by planning a post-tour visit to the Oberweis store at 951 Ice Cream Drive, North Aurora.
