Immanuel and San Pablo Hold Joint Cinco de Mayo Celebration
Immanuel Lutheran Church and School, Batavia and San Pablo Lutheran Church, Aurora holding the joint celebration at Engstrom Park, Batavia.

Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Batavia and San Pablo Lutheran Church in Aurora are joining together to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on May 5 from 10 AM-12:30 PM at Engstrom Park in Batavia. The event is made possible with financial support from the Lutheran Church Extension Fund and the Northern Illinois District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
The celebration will include a free taco meal for the first 400 in attendance, violinist Hector David, street magician Joshua Talbot-Bowe, bounce houses, and slime table activities sponsored by CTS.
Children will be invited to participate in traditional piñata fun, beginning with the history of how the piñata was introduced in Mexico. Sixteenth century monks utilized piñatas to share religious teachings with indigenous people. At that time piñatas were stars with seven points that represented the seven deadly sins: pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust.
Pastors Eric Kennaugh (Immanuel) and Alex Merlo (San Pablo) will co-host this free family celebration. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's unexpected victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican-American culture. The community is invited to attend this free family celebration of fellowship and heritage.
