Kane County Coronavirus Cases Near 8K; 277 Deaths

Public health data shows 135 Batavia residents have tested positive for the coronavirus and 2 have died, as of Saturday.

KANE COUNTY, IL — Forty people in Kane County have tested positive for the coronavirus over the first two days of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, bringing the county’s total to 7,890 cases, according to public health data.

Statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health indicate there has been no significant spike in coronavirus cases after Illinois moved the phase 4 of its reopening plan at the end of June, allowing gatherings of up to 50 people and bringing the return of almost all businesses previously deemed nonessential by officials.

The 7-day rolling average of daily cases — a measure that takes into account daily fluctuations in testing to show longer-term trends — has remained under 50 since June 14, the data shows. The figure stood at just over 30 on Saturday, down from an all-time high of 218 in mid-May.

Aurora residents account for about 43 percent of all coronavirus cases in the county, with 3,412, the data shows. More than 350 residents in Aurora's other three counties — DuPage, Kendall and Will — have also tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the city's statistics.

More than 1,900 Elgin residents have tested positive, as well as 765 in Carpentersville, 322 in St. Charles, 213 in North Aurora, 191 in Geneva and 135 in Batavia, according to the state's data.

As of Saturday, 277 Kane County residents have died after testing positive for the virus, including 156 residents of long-term-care facilities, the data shows. Though they represent 11.8 percent of all coronavirus cases in Kane County, residents of long-term-care facilities account for about 56 percent of all deaths.
