Man Charged With Illegally Carrying Gun In Batavia Restaurant

The man did not have a concealed carry license

Collin B. St. Phillip was charged with unlawful use of a weapon after he was spotted with a handgun in a Batavia Restaurant on March 24, according to the Kane County Chronicle. St. Phillip, was a patron at Steak 'n Shake at 1901 McKee St. in Batavia around 7:45 a.m. when he was reported to police for having a gun. There was no incident, but the department was asked to ensure that he was legally carrying. Police determined that St. Phillip, a 37-year-old Chicago man, did not have a concealed carry licence. He was released, and he is due in court on May 2.

More than 181,000 Illinoisans have a license to carry a concealed firearm, according to the Illinois State Police. State law requires applicants to pass a background check and complete 16 hours of training to obtain a concealed carry license. Private businesses may prohibit even those with licenses from carrying firearms by posting a sign.

A charge is merely an accusation of a crime, not a finding of guilt.
