Preservation Week Celebrates Batavia's Rich History

Antiques, antebellum homes, and more await during Batavia Preservation Week.

BATAVIA, IL — Founded in the early 19th century, Batavia is the oldest city in Kane County. The city's rich history will be in the spotlight with walking tours, antiques shows, and educational classes during Batavia Preservation Week. The weeklong celebration, which is sponsored by the city's historical society, will run from April 22 through April 28.

Here are some ways you can learn about Batavia's historic homes and even uncover some of your family's personal history during Batavia Preservation Week.

Antiques Appraisal Fair: April 22

If you've ever dreamed of being on "Antiques Roadshow," you can dig out your old treasures and bring them to the Lodge at Laurelwood, 800 N. River St., to find out their value. The appraisal fair will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and antiques lovers can bring one item to be appraised for $10 and 3 for $25.

Preserving Family Heirlooms Program: April 23

The Batavia Public Library will host the Preserving Family Heirlooms program on April 23 at 7 p.m. The free class will help you learn how to delve into the history of your beloved family heirlooms to learn more about their origins.

Dating Photography Through Clothing: April 24

On April 24, the Lodge at Lakewood will host a class that shares the tips and tricks to dating photography by matching the subject's clothing to a specific era. The class costs $10 and begins at 6 p.m.

Downtown Properties Historical Walking Tour: April 25

Downtown Batavia is filled with properties that have a hidden history. If you've ever wondered what that storefront used to be, you may want to head to Waterstreet Studios at 5 p.m. on April 25 for the Historical Walking Tour of Downtown Batavia. Registration is $5.

Antebellum Houses in Batavia: April 26

Learn about the many antebellum houses in Batavia at a class presented by Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley. The class takes place at the Batavia Civic Center at 7 p.m. and the cost to participate is $5.

Batavia Memories Preservation Project: April 28

Explore how preservationists work to keep Batavia's history alive. The free clas takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Batavia Civic Center.

Walking Tour of East Side Homes

See more of Batavia's historic properties during the walking tour of home's on the city's east side. Walkers will meet up at the northeast Corner of Wilson and Van Buren at 2 p.m. before setting out. The cost to go on the walking tour is $5.
