Suspect Sought In Batavia Attempted Robbery

Police said two men attempted to rob the victim who was waiting for a ride in an apartment building vestibule. One man has been charged.

BATAVIA, IL—One man has been charged, and a second man remains on the loose, following an attempted armed robbery that occurred during the late night hours of May 4.

The following day, police were contacted by the victim who reported that they were in an apartment building vestibule in the 1200 block of E. Wilson Street waiting for a ride when they were approached by two men.

Batavia police said the men demanded property from the victim, who refused to comply. The suspects then grabbed at the victim’s pockets in attempt to gain valuables by force. The victim resisted, at which time the first suspect pulled out a firearm and threatened the victim with it. He then struck the victim in the face with the firearm, causing injuries that required treatment at an area hospital.

According to police, the suspects fled the area eastbound on foot following the incident.
The victim was able to positively identify the first suspect as 18-year-old Batavia resident Daeshawn J. Clemons, 1200 block of E. Wilson St..

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges against Clemons: Armed violence, two counts of attempted armed robbery, aggravated battery, and possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

At this time, police said the second suspect remains unidentified.

He has been described as a black male in his early twenties, between 5-feet, 6-inches tall and 5-feet, 8-inches tall. No further description was available.

The charges against Clemons are not proof of guilt. Clemons is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
