CHICAGO — While barbershops and hair salons remained closed throughout Illinois due to Gov. J.B. Pritzker's stay-at-home order amid the spread of the new coronavirus, one shop on the city's South Side is having some fun while they wait it out. The Cutrone Barbershop, at 3118 W. 111th St. in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood, is holding a "no-cut" contest and will give out a full year's worth of free hair cuts to the contest participant who grows their hair out the best.

"We've been here for years, and being in Mount Greenwood a lot of our customers are cops, firemen and city workers," said Antonio Cutrone, the second-generation owner of the shop that's stood at the same address since his father opened it in 1973.

"We know our customers are still out there working," Cutrone said. "They usually come in every 2-3 weeks and now that they can't we are just trying to come up with something to put a little bit of a positive spin on a negative situation."

Cutrone said there will be one "grand winner" that will win the year's worth of haircuts and the man who grows the best beard will get one free razor shave. There's also a kids contest, with the youngster age 12 or under who grows out the best hair winning one free hair cut.

The steps are simple, Cutrone said.

1. Keep growing your hair

2. Take a picture of the grown-out hair, and

3. Send the photo via a direct message to the Cutrone Barbershop Facebook page when they reopen.

"We're looking for the most dramatically grown-out, shaggiest hair," Cutrone said, hoping that while the team of barbers at Cutrone is "hunkering down now," there will be a line out the door and down the sidewalk on 111th Street once they do reopen.

"That's what we are looking forward to," he said.
