Chicago Artist Jennifer McNulty's Iconic Mosaics Showcase At SXU
Jennifer McNulty's "More Influence" exhibit, featuring her iconic 3D mosaics, will be on view at Saint Xavier University Feb. 12 to March 6.
CHICAGO, IL The Saint Xavier University Gallery is proud to host the work of Jennifer McNulty, an award-winning Chicago artist whose work carries a personal and historical social message that touches on feminism, civil rights, Chicago’s history and more. McNulty draws her inspiration from mosaics she spotted during her time in London, England. The gallery will open for the 2020 spring semester with McNulty’s exhibit of “More Influence,” featuring her iconic 3D mosaics.
McNulty’s works combine the graphic beauty of photography with the sculptural quality of mosaics, giving the art depth and creating a harmonious piece that often encompasses decades of memories in a single work of art. From a distance, the subject of the piece is evident, but once viewers move closer, they will see that the pieces are made up from hundreds of individual photos that have been meticulously researched and edited to form the subject.
“My work explores the dichotomous relationship between perception and reality in both subject matter and presentation. Every piece carries a positive social message including trailblazers, activists and influential people in the fields of women’s rights, LGBT activism, civil rights, science, culture and arts, entertainment and beyond,” McNulty says about her work.
McNulty has had over 20 local, regional and international exhibitions and is president of the board of directors of the Oak Part Art League.
The exhibition runs from Feb. 12 to March 6, with a presentation by the artist and reception on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 3:30 p.m. All are invited to attend and encouraged to come learn more about why McNulty considers mosaics an ancient art form and how they influence her to merge her illustrations with mosaic tiles on antique pieces.
Visit the SXU website for more information on the SXU Gallery and its exhibits. The gallery and attendance to McNulty’s reception are free and open to the public. SXU is located at 3700 W. 103rd St. in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood.
