Deli Provides Food To Pub So It Can Remain Open In Pandemic

CHICAGO (BEVERLY) — As Chicago reimposes coronavirus restrictions, Beverly business owners are banding together to help their business neighbors stay afloat during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The rollback has been especially tough on Chicago bars that don’t serve food, being ordered to close their indoor spaces. Establishments that serve food may continue to operate their bars.

To survive the restrictions, Barney Callaghan's Pub — a favorite neighborhood watering hole at 10618 S. Western Ave., Chicago — began selling box lunches and appetizers Friday from Swanson’s Deli and Catering.

“Mary and Bernard are wonderful people,” Swanson’s Deli owner Greg Dix said. “We want to help them survive.”

Swanson’s, 2414 W. 103rd St., has prepared a menu of bar sandwiches, including corned beef, roast turkey with pepper bacon, Italian subs and pastrami served on artisan rolls. In addition, patrons can nosh on a charcuterie platter, cheese ball tray with pretzel crisps, chile con queso or a hummus platter. All can be washed down with a crisp glass of wine or PBR, no rules, Callaghan’s said.

By serving food, Callaghan’s can keep the doors open. The pub opens at noon.

Swanson’s Deli hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
