Tornado That Developed In Beverly 57 Years Ago Remembered

Tom Skilling remembers the tornado of March 4, 1961, which developed over 91st and Hoyne in North Beverly.

CHICAGO, IL - WGN's weather guru Tom Skilling often answers questions readers have about major weather-related events from long ago. This week, a fan's question was about a rare tornado that touched down in the city limits of Chicago.

According to Skilling, an F-2 tornado struck the city's South Side on March 4, 1961. It developed in North Beverly near 91st and Hoyne and followed a path northeast before dying out at the lake near 68th Street.

The tornado damaged two elementary schools and resulted in one fatality when it toppled a cafe (possibly a Piggly Wiggly) at 87th and Loomis.
