Video Captures Suspects In Fatal Shooting of Retired Firefighter

Police released photos and video of the attempted carjacking that resulted in the shooting death of a retired Chicago firefighter.

CHICAGO — Surveillance images from nearby store security cameras have been released of four men police believe were involved in an attempted carjacking last week in Morgan Park that left a retired Chicago Fire Department lieutenant dead.

Dwain Williams, 65, died during an exchange of gunfire with carjackers who were after Williams’ Grand Jeep Cherokee, Chicago police said. Williams had just left a popcorn store at 118th Street and Western Avenue on Dec. 3 when he was confronted by three armed men.

Williams pulled out his own concealed weapon when he was shot in the stomach during an exchange of gunfire, police said. The gunmen piled back into the Ford Fusion they arrived in and were last seen heading down Artesian Avenue. The gravely injured Williams was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The security images show the three masked suspects climbing out of a dark-colored Ford Fusion holding guns. Two of the suspects were wearing black pants, black hooded jackets and white gym shoes. A third was wearing a blue hooded jacket and white shoes. The driver of the getaway car can not be seen in the video.

Community activists and organizations have posted a reward for information leading hoping it will trigger someone to come forward who can identify the suspects. The reward money was organized by Rev. Michael Pfleger and now stands at over $35,000, including money put up by Pfleger, the popcorn store Let’s Get Poppin, community organization I’m Telling Don’t Shoot, and community activists Raul Montes and Andrew Holmes, WGN reported.

Pfleger called Williams’ slaying “another absolutely senseless killing” and evidence of the city’s increasingly out-of-control violence.

Williams joined the Chicago Fire Department in 1992 and retired about two years ago, CFD officials said. He was set to return to the Office of Emergency Management and Communications as a civilian employee.

Anyone with information about the shooting or who recognizes the suspects is urged to call Area 2 Detectives at 312-747-8271 or send tips to cpdtip.com.
