Bucktown, Wicker Park Wealth: Rich, Poor Blocks

We broke down the household income by block in Bucktown and Wicker Park. Check out where the wealthiest, and the poorest, residents in town live.

It’s no surprise that household income in Bucktown and Wicker Park is well above the state's average, but certain blocks in the community are far wealthier than others.

It’s all broken down by the website Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks, an online tool that combines Google Maps with the most recent Census data to show income and rent prices in every neighborhood in the U.S.

According to the U.S. Census’ American Community Survey from 2007-2011, the richest people in town live in the blocks encompassed primarily by North Wood Street on the east to North Western Avenue on the west and then West Armitage and West North avenues on the north and south, respectively. The median household income there is about $114,000.

An area tacked onto that section—just beyond Bucktown's border—is west of Western to North Rockwell Street in between West Bloomingdale and West North avenues, where the median income is about $104,000. 

Wicker Park's wealthiest blocks fall inside the triangle formed by West North, North Ashland and North Milwaukee Avenues, where the median income is just shy of $93,000.

Those values compare Illinois’ middle-class household income ranging between $48,000 and $59,000.

The poorest households in the area are near Bucktown's northern border. Reportedly earning about $65,600 annually, those living between Fullerton, Western and Armitage avenues; with North Leavitt Street serving as the western edge, earn the least money in town.

Although there’s a significant difference between the richest and poorest blocks in Bucktown and Wicker Park, it’s nothing compared to blocks just a stone’s throw from the community’s borders.

Those living in a Logan Square area that butts up against Bucktown's northwestern edge earn $34,000, the website reports, with others in that community earning as little as about $17,000 a year.

Slightly southwest of that section in parts of Humboldt Park, Garfield Park and South Austin, most residents are reported as earning salaries that loom in the low to mid-20,000s.
